Whether you are just about to start or finish college and are looking for some direction or if you have started your career and are questioning if it is what you really want to do, you should travel. Why? Because now is the perfect time for that good ole travel cliché to have its biggest impact, it could be life changing. Take a month or more to get out and see the world, the good and the bad, interact with people from different cultures and develop a informed world view and a sense of purpose.backpacker-thailand

While your mind is in this questioning state the time is perfect for traveling.

  • When you learn about your place in the world knowing what you want to do with your life can appear much clearer, you’ll discover more about the things you are passionate about and that really inspire you. Travel can help you decide if your career choice is the right one or inspire you to pursue a path that you had not yet considered or thought out of your reach. Reflect on where your life is going. There is some much we don’t know about the world when we stay at home, when you see the grand constructions of civilizations past, smiles on faces of people who have next to nothing or how greed can drag down entire nations it gives us a perspective that you can’t get any other way.
  • You will be glad you took the plunge and did something so many people put off or never do. Even if you never travel again you will know what is out there, what the opportunities are and the scope of the possibilities for the rest of your life. You’ll have done something everyone should do at least once in their life, as sort of ‘rite of passage’. You won’t regret travel, there is too much you can learn about yourself and the world from your experience. Save yourself from wishing you had done it later in life.
  • Tick off some of those things you’ve got on your must do list. Your work or school to do list can have a break for a while, those lists aren’t full of things that you will remember for the rest of your life, not unless you got lucky anyway.Prevent the quarter life crisis.
  • Make it a reward, you’ve worked hard to get into your course of choice, to complete it or to get and succeed in the job you have. You’ll understand how fortunate you are to be in that position, have some time to relax, revel in your success and put the plans for world domination on hold for just little while. Come home inspired, dream bigger and look at your life and plans on a global scale rather than just within your immediate community or nation.
  • Learn something new. Get your diving qualification, study a language, learn to Salsa dance, volunteer. There are a bunch of things you’ll struggle to find the time to do amongst your usual work and social life. You might even end up with something unique to add to your resume.

It really is worth taking some time before you make those life decisions that can be hard to alter later on. Most people will better know themselves after doing some eye opening travel and will be able to make better life decisions that will lead to them living more fulfilling lives.

Why not volunteer?

You can utilise exisiting skills or just put in some good old hard labour and really make a difference to a community overseas. There has been alot of bad press on volunteer organisations recently as many people seem to have a bad time. Don’t let this put you off, whether you are thinking of going with an organisation or going solo make sure you do your research and ask questions.

An excellent site for more advice http://www.ethicalvolunteering.org/

If you are interested in volunteering take a look at what Quest Overseas has to offer and our own guide if you have been ‘gifted’ a gap year. http://www.questoverseas.com/exam-results-gifted-you-with-a-gap-year.html
