stepping-stonesIf you are looking to change your life you have to take action.  There are no quick fixes, but with planning and dedication you can do it.

Step 1Do a Dreamline

Download the Dreamline or Goals and Planning worksheet I mentioned in the Download your Dream Life post or simply write down where you want your life to be in a year or two, where do you want to live? How much money do you have? What do you spend your time doing? Think big picture but don’t be too worried about the details for now.

Step 2Make Yourself Accountable

More people reach their goals when they make themselves accountable to someone else, it is a good idea to make your plans known, especially if you can share them with someone who will support you. It’s not so bad for word to get out to someone who will think you are crazy though, when you eventually prove them wrong your success will be just that much sweeter.

Step 3Spend Less Than You Earn

If you have any debt it will be a relief if you can clear it before you leave, you’ll also feel more confident if you can build up enough savings to cover your expenses for a few months if something doesn’t go as planned. Breaking out of the consumerist mindset is a great step towards  freeing yourself from conventional life.

Step 4Work Part Time On Your Portable Business

Whether you choose to freelance, try your hand at internet marketing, consulting or street performances you’ll want to be confident in yourself that you can make a living from whatever you choose and that you will enjoy it. Start building up your income and building any systems around it that will make managing it while you travel easier. Work hard, work smart and keep learning.

Step 5 - Take a Trip

And take your work with you, try to get away for at least a month. There are two really good reasons for doing this.

1. Test your discipline to do the work you need to do while there are so many other things you can be and want to be doing.

You’ll know if it really is for you or not once you’ve done this and if you know once and for all it is what you want to do, you will be able to focus completely. You don’t want to find out that it’s not what you expected after you’ve done all that hard work and left your day job.

2. It will inspire and motivate you to keep working at it, once you’ve had a taste of the lifestyle you will never look back. Failure will not be an option anymore, you will be consumed with doing everything humanly possible to make your dream a reality.

Step 6 – Offload “Stuff”

Digital Nomads thrive on not having the burden of possessions holding them back. We like to keep our lives fairly simple and we don’t want the things we own to end up owning us, we love the freedom having few possessions gives us, they money we can get from selling stuff off doesn’t hurt either.

I’ve done all these things, albeit in different order and it has really put me on track, you mindset is the most important thing in working towards becoming a Digital Nomad and all these things work to the benefit of having that mindset you need, let me know your thoughts and what works for you.
