Great post! I spent 7 months in Ubud a few years ago. I was very glad to leave by the end - it is a gorgeous place, the locals are friendly but the extreme yoga scene there at the moment is what really turned me off. I just found it quite irritating.

But - I would highly recommend it as a place to chill for a few days. My other top spots in SE Asia -
- Lake Maninjau, Sumatra
-Tirtagganga, Bali
-Anywhere in Flores, Indonesia
-Akha Village, just out of Chiang Rai, Thailand
-Luang Prabang, Laos. (Not quite as chilled out as the others, but still, a very tranquil town).

LONDON KL LONDON seats are getting smaller and close to unbearable. This was not the case last year, it now feel uncomfortable and cheap- that is not acceptable for 12 plus hours. Found myself promising to look for alternatives for this regular flight.
Crew lazy and can be rude, offer little or no help, and will just stand at back galley laughing shouting and playing for whole flight. They get upset if have to work some very very grumpy and rude some try to make up for their bad coworkers.management seems to have failed here.
Summary- until decent seat size returns avoid airasiax, prices getting higher, seats smaller, crew lazier, better spend a bit more and fly in comfort

As Amer pointed out, while Air Asia X between KL and London (which is actually Stansted Airport and about an hour away from the city limits of London) might be cheap at first inspection, the prices soon mount up when you add in tax, your luggage and the basic things you expect on a long haul flight.

The only way these tickets are ever cheap is if you buy them way in advance.

I went to Thailand a few summers ago and it was incredible! Don't rule out Thailand yet. It's huge with lots of different kinds of places to visit. Cambodia is also great! Try heading to the less touristy places if you go there..Battambang is one of my favorites.

Happy Travels!

"I could give you GPS cooridinates or stick a placemark on a Google Map for this but that would be too easy. Plus why would anyone give up a chance to draw a secret map in Microsoft Paint?"

So much better! There's no sense of discovery if there's no challenge. You'll be pleased to know the treehouse is not visible on Bing or Google aerial imagery.

A friend and I once followed some bad directions to find an interesting remote section of the Great Wall. It was not in perfect shape, but not terrible. Good enough to still be the great wall, bad enough not to feel like a tourist facade. Impressive, interesting, and no one else around. Had the directions been easy, it wouldn't have been as much fun. (Had they been impossible, it would have been frustrating and disappointing.)

"Have I just broken a travelers code for secret places?"

It's a tough call. I get to enjoy knowing it's out there, and maybe I'll visit it one day, just once. If I do visit it, it will be less special because I won't have discovered it myself, but I'm much more likely to see it now. But it hardly matters, since I wouldn't climb it anyway. :)
