Yes! Don’t for a minute reconsider traveling because you are worried it is not safe. Unless you are planning a trip to Iraq, Afghanistan or North Korea you’ll be just as safe as you are at home in most cases. The media likes to depict a world descending into chaos, in fact it always has and people have always said that the moral fabric of society is deteriorating. Out in the world though you find that most people are going about their daily lives and trying to be good people while doing so, just like you.
Just like in your own country, city or town there are places that are less safe than other, normally though you won’t find yourself in these places, not even by accident. If you are traveling on tours you’ll be safer than you are at home. Tour operators (so long as you have chosen a respectable one) will not put you in danger of being a victim of crime.
The most common crimes affecting travelers is theft. Pickpocketing, unattended belongings and muggings. I had a camera and a couple of knock off watches stolen in Thailand, I left them in my hotel room and they were taken by the cleaner. My own fault really, I should have used the lockers at the hotel reception.
If it is terrorism you fear I hope you don’t buy lottery tickets. If you think you will win the lottery then I can understand your fear of terrorism. You’re not going to win the lottery though and there is even less of a chance you will be killed or injured by terrorism.
I thought I would find some reasons as to why travel might not be safe. Try these searches in Google and check out the results.
- “why travel scares my”
- “why travel is unsafe”
- “why travel is not safe”
Maybe you will get different results to me but none of these queries returned any results for me.
In most cases the reasons to travel far outweigh any reasons to not travel. And once you are on your trip fear of crime will be no more of an issue than if you were at home.
Some people are just scared to leave their own country and this is maybe the hardest fear to break down. It is probably most often based on simple ignorance and maybe prejudice, these people are possibly somewhat xenophobic. Like any fear exposure is one of the best solutions but I think in this case, unless their minds are prepared to see things in a new way they may just see what they already imagine the rest of the world to be like, a place you’d rather not venture into.
If you are looking for adventure then fear should not stand in your way, fear is probably adventure’s greatest foe and its greatest ally, so I say take it on.

I’m always amused when people say “things are so bad in the world, we’re going down the tubes.” That’s just a ‘half-empty glass’ perspective. We’re a lot better off than ancient Romans, middle-ages peasants, and even 19th century landowners (where women couldn’t vote and slaves were legal).
I think it’s the same with travel. If one is careful with belongings, areas of the city one walks about, and walking during “safe” times of day, most destinations are not as dangerous as people think. There’s always SOME risk, including in your front yard back home!
Wow – the photo looks like its from Vietnam. I was there at New Year and the advice to cross the road was ‘just walk, the bikes/mopeds will ride around you’ – Great advice huh? Very very scary crossing the road, but it did work and they do go around you!
