That's just a 'half-empty glass' perspective. We're a lot better off than ancient Romans, middle-ages peasants, and even 19th century landowners (where women couldn't vote and slaves were legal). I think it's the same with travel. If one is careful with belongings, areas of the city one walks about, and walking during "safe" times of day, most destinations are not as dangerous as people think. There's always SOME risk, including in your front yard back home! I was there at New Year and the advice to cross the road was 'just walk, the bikes/mopeds will ride around you' - Great advice huh?
