A flight at 6.30am may be $79 while the same flight later in the day say 2 or 3 pm can be $200+ with the same airline. The being flexible really is the key i think. I also check out for promos by major airlines. For my Southeast Asian trip, I found that a Malaysia Airlines flight from Siem Reap to Kuala Lumpur (which was on promo) was ultimately cheaper than a flight on Air Asia.
